People with dementia & carers

Present as part of 'Be the change'

It is a pleasure to invite people with dementia and family members to be a part of ‘Be the change’. This 17th biennial conference organised by Alzheimer’s Australia will take place in Melbourne between 17 and 20 October 2017.

Alzheimer’s Australia encourages people living with dementia and carers to participate as guest presenters. If you are interested in sharing your story during this event, we invite you to put forward your presentation idea. Successful applicants will be featured alongside national and international leaders in innovative dementia research and practice.

In keeping with the conference theme ‘Be the change’, we would especially like to hear from people living with dementia that are leading change in their own community. We are keen to hear from people with dementia with a strong and inspiring vision for how they can be supported to live their lives.

  • The voices of people with dementia
  • Dementia-friendly communities – spaces, places and people
  • Support for carers
  • Freedom, autonomy, independence and risk
  • Young people
  • End of life care

Presentation Types

If your presentation idea is successful, we may ask you to give your presentation in one of three ways:

  • A spoken presentation lasting 30 minutes (for example, 20 minutes plus question time)
  • A digital poster that will be displayed at the conference
  • Storytelling, sharing stories in an informal way in an inclusive space lasting 30 minutes (20 minutes plus 10 minutes of open discussion) Storytelling sessions may involve multiple contributors.

We may allocate a presentation type to you, but if you have a preference please let us know in your presentation idea. The Consumer Engagement Officer will be available to assist you with these presentations. People with dementia may also wish to pre-record some, or all, of their story.
